SLEEP: WHAT YOU'RE MISSING

Number one complaint I am constantly hearing from co-workers and friends: "I'm SO tired." The obvious answer? Get more sleep!! Seems simple enough until you find yourself occupied by the Internet, work emails, games, TV, (the list goes on forever) and midnight rolls around and you're dreading your 6AM wake-up call.

Sleep, which we all know is a necessity to living is something most of us seem to ignore. In fact, most people only get 6 hours of sleep while some of you night owls (23% to be exact) get less than 6 hours a night. Hearing these eye-opening facts about sleep deprivation, which we discovered through an article via Lifehack, might just be the true wake-up call you need to a healthy night's sleep.

  • Breast Cancer: Going to bed too late DOUBLES the risk of breast cancer
  • Risk of Heart Disease: Getting less than 7 hours of sleep = 100% increased likelihood of a heart attack
  • Risk of Death: If you are sleep deprived, you are 20% more likely to be dead in 20 years
  • Obesity: Instead of watching TV, you could lose 14.3lbs per year by sleeping 1 hour more each day

Now that you're probably finding yourself saying, "Seriously, I could die from sleep deprivation??" Here are some positive effects that getting more sleep will have on you, mentally and physically!
  • Increased Problem Solving:  A single night of sleep can more than double our ability to come up with innovative solutions to difficult problems.
  • Smarter Kids: Longer sleep is associated with higher IQ in children.
  • Empathy: Sleep more and increase your ability to empathize.
  • Sexy Time: Ladies, no longer feel too sleepy for sex! (1 in 3 women report being too sleepy to do it.)

So why not do yourself a favor and join the 7% of people who do get the proper 8 hour sleep and look and feel healthier?? A trick in helping you fall asleep faster is called "Paradoxical Intention," which is a method by which you try to stay awake for as long as you can while laying in bed with your eyes closed. (I've personally tried this and it really does work...) Sweet Dreams to all!
